Check out this video from NHL.com of Niklas Kronwall busting his blade right off the holder, and then having to finish off his shift in the defensive zone.

He does pretty well, all things considered.  I imagine it would be very similar to stepping onto the ice with your skate guards still on.  Not that I ever did that, of course.
