Olympic Women’s Hockey Underway

Both Team Canada and Team USA have their first games under their belt, and both chalked up easy victories.  Canada defeated Slovakia 18-0, while Team USA defeated Team China 12-1.  This was not unexpected, as there is a large gap between the best and the worst in women’s hockey, and it is likely to renew calls for a mercy rule of some sort in hockey.

In any Olympic sport, there is a large gap between the best and the worst competitors.  In hockey, it is just more obvious because they are in head to head competition.  If you take a look at cross country skiing, the gold medallist will have absolutely destroyed the last place finisher, but they don’t pull that guy off in the middle of the race when it becomes clear he isn’t going to win.  He gets his chance to play out his Olympic experience in its entirety, both the good and the bad.  Women’s hockey teams get the same chance, and they build from it and gain experience.

  • I am well aware that the “Good Ole Boy” effect is alive and well in hockey… even the women’s game… but someone needs to tell coach that she needs to start Szabados if we are going to beat the U.S.
    Kim’s time has past.

T, you have connections, you know people… get it done.

  • I would love to see Szabados starting the big games. I think if you look at the numbers, there is no possible reason that she isn’t in net for the big games. She was amazing during the leadup to the games.
