Update on NHL Licensing Situation

Confirmation seems to be leaking out that the NHL and NHLPA have made their decisions for licensed hockey card manufacturers for the next little while.  Upper Deck has had their license renewed, and Panini is in there as well.

Lots of collectors have been shouting for change for the last five years, and now they have it.  Unfortunately, lots of collectors also assumed that the beneficiary of the expanded market would be In The Game. So, now comes the moment of truth – are collectors really happy with the expanded market, or angry at the NHL for spurning their favoured manufacturer.

I think the hockey card market will benefit from this change.  I hope Panini brightens up their card designs a little bit though – they use too much foilboard for my liking.  I’d like to see some white borders and blue autographs.

For the NHL’s take on the situation, check out the interview on the Beckett Blog.

  • with running the risk of being too eloquent,

    their basketball cards suck,

and their football cards are worse than sucky.

    the future ain’t bright.

however, I hope this is the kick in the a$$ that UD needs to get back to making quality hockey cards again.
